US residential fire claims children’s lives 2025
A fire has broken out in a multi-story building in the Bronx, New York, killing at least 19 people. Fox News, citing the fire department, reports that nine children were among the dead, and dozens more were injured. A total of 60 people are known to have been injured, more than half of whom were seriously injured. Four firefighters were among the injured, but their injuries are not life-threatening.
During a press conference, New York City Fire Chief Daniel Nigro said the fire may have been caused by a faulty heater in one of the apartments. The family living in the apartment did not slam the door when they evacuated the building, which contributed to the spread of flames and smoke.
According to Nigro, the fire only engulfed two floors, while smoke enveloped almost the entire building. People who had inhaled combustion products were found on almost every floor of the multi-story building, and many of the victims suffered burns to their upper respiratory tract.
American Internet users vigorously discussed the tragedy on Twitter and under the corresponding publication. building
“Why are new high rise buildings being built without fire escapes? They should be a MUST in every building! These people had no chance to even try to escape if they couldn’t get out the front door in time! This is unacceptable and needs to be fixed,” writes @Sandie03218817.
“God bless everyone! The Bronx is one of the worst boroughs to live in, fires happen there regularly! Not to mention the crime…” – @network0617.
“Wouldn’t it be a good idea in the future for those stuck high up or unable to reach to use delivery drones to get out?” @MarymoBelfast wonders.
“In the future, yes, but probably not in the near future. The typical modern drone does not have the sustained lift needed to support a human. Also, drones can become unstable in headwinds, and a building fire has a lot of high wind forces,” @johngineer replies.
“Two major fires in two major cities in one week. What the hell is going on!” @unclebobbyt fumes.
“I was there, I could barely breathe. I have asthma and I’m so glad I got out safely, but I don’t know what caused the fire, all I know is that I heard a lot of people screaming for help, some windows were broken and some people passed out,” he says.
“What is this building? It’s like something out of Frankenstein’s hell. It looks like it was built from an original Lego set. Where are the fire escapes and why wasn’t there a sprinkler system?” he asks.
“Why did the fire spread so quickly? Were the smoke detectors working? Was the sprinkler system working?” he continues.
“You might want to look into the NYC FDNY fire codes. Fire escapes have not been a part of most buildings since 1968. Sprinklers were not required in older buildings. Fire-rated buildings have interior fire escapes, fire doors separating spaces, and self-closing doors,” replies
“Our hearts are heavy with prayers for all the families affected by this tragedy. While this is very difficult for all New Yorkers, we must immediately inspect all high rise buildings for fire safety and plans in accordance with safety codes and city regulations,” urges @MsShayNico.
“This is a terrible tragedy for all those killed, especially the children. My prayers and thoughts go out to everyone who has lost a family member,” writes @Mikael_Swede.
Earlier, REGNUM reported that the fire started on January 9 after 11:00 (19:00 Moscow time) and was extinguished by 14:00 (22:00 Moscow time). More than 200 firefighters were involved in fighting the fire.
